CLASS and MASS Attendance:The Diocese of San Diego expects religious education students to attend at least 75% of all class meetings. Students who are preparing for First Communion or Confirmation are required to attend religious education for two years in preparation for their sacrament. Confirmation students are also required to attend a retreat each year for their class level. More important than any other requirement is to attend Mass regularly, as it is one of the Five Precepts of the Church. Students are also encouraged to participate in the Mass in a volunteer capacity. Examples of involvement include altar serving, lectoring, ushering, helping as a sacristan and serving coffee and donuts. Youth involvement in the Sunday Mass, especially in leadership roles, is the clearest indicator that our programs are bearing fruit. In signing up to be part of this program, you affirm that you are willing to make this commitment.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION DISCIPLINE GUIDELINES The Diocese of San Diego guidelines regarding religious education classroom discipline (DCM Guideline #22) requires that parents and students be informed of the parish's policy for behavior standards prior to the beginning of the school year. St. Timothy Confirmation Service Requirement (Confirmation Only)
The St. Timothy Confirmation program is centered around the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We therefore stress the importance of each student using his/her gifts to build the Kingdom of God. Students are required to complete 15 Hours of Service each catechetical year as part of the Confirmation program. All service needs to be completed through the parish (e.g. altar serving, lectoring, ushering, sacristan, helping with coffee and donuts, helping with lenten soup suppers, helping with a Knights of Columbus event, etc). Youth involvement in the Sunday Mass, especially in leadership roles, is the clearest indicator that our programs are bearing fruit. If a student is on the Parish Ministry Schedule, he/she has thereby completed their service requirement and does not need to keep track of these hours. Only students who are on the Parish Ministry Schedule will be considered for the Service Awards given at the end of the year.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17)
Confirmation and religious education is not merely an academic endeavor, it is an education of the whole person. Therefore, it is important for students to develop friendships of virtue and be involved in the life of the parish with each other.
