Minister of the Word (lectors)

"The Lord God has given me a well trained tongue that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear."

Isaiah 50:4

LECTOR MINISTRY PURPOSE. To proclaim God's word to those gathered in Catholic worship and in so doing participate in their understanding the mystery of faith as written in holy scripture.

LECTORS' ACTIVITIES. Those individuals selected to this Ministry train and develop skills for reading aloud to an assembled congregation in a manner to convey clarity and comprehension of sacred scripture - bringing the printed world to life and meaning. Lectors normally read two times each month, alternating between Old Testament and New Testament scriptures. On those occasions when the Deacon does not participate in the Celebration, the individual assigned the second reading also reads the Prayers of the Faithful following the Apostles' Creed. The Lector Reading Schedule is published quarterly.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT. Plans have commenced to establish parish training/coaching programs for new lectors. Development programs providing expanded knowledge of scripture and enrichment insights into the lector ministry are under study for presentations and lector interaction on a quarterly or semiannual schedule. In addition, periodic lector training programs are held at the Diocesan Pastoral Center in San Diego presenting the opportunity for new and experienced lectors to improve skills and proclaim the Word more effectively. Pre-registration is $25 per person. Contact the individual listed below for scheduled dates and details.

PERSONAL ADVANTAGES FROM LECTOR MINISTRY PARTICIPATION. A minister of the word enters a deeper, more personal relationship with God by the study, understanding and proclaiming the printed word -- bringing it to life. In so doing, the lector achieves God's intent as first inscribed and proclaimed thousands of years ago. Participation and continued self improvement efforts in this ministry add spiritual dimension and a sense of personal contribution to the religious life of the individual involved and those who hear the spoken Word of the Lord.
